Dancing in the street

It all started at Ça me dit, my favorite Saturday morning coffee shop. While the almond milk frothed for a deliciously indulgent coffee latte, I worked on a few pivot steps…

As her tea leaves steeped, my friend Jennifer Laframboise joined in. It did not rise to the level of a flashmob dance scene, but we were moving and grooving nonetheless.

How it started

A few months back, Jennifer and I learned a line dancing routine that we vowed not to forget. It was easy, fun, and works to almost any song (although we both prefer country tunes).

Right side step, touch back. Left side step, touch back. Right pivot, left pivot, hop in, hop out. A 180-degree jump turn. Pivot back, tap, tap, tap, repeat. Simple. But to remember it, we needed to practise. So we did… wherever we went.

Taking it to the street

In line at the bank? Side step, touch back, pivot, pivot. At the Metro, the condiment aisle was empty: I gave the sequence a whirl.

Jennifer and I took our routine on the road in March, and danced our way through the cobblestoned roads of San Pancho, Mexico. We bopped the beat at outdoor fruit stalls; while waiting for fresh warm churros from a street vendor; surfside as the Pacific Ocean lapped at our toes…

Folks in this tiny village even suggested a few new moves which we added to our sequence. April is that in-between month in Mont- Tremblant. Not quite winter and not quite spring. It’s the perfect time to shake off the snowflakes and welcome the daffodils with a few dance steps.

No need to take it to the David Bowie and Mick Jagger level. Just move and have fun. It’s almost spring: time to get ready for a brand-new beat.
