Celebrating seniority

I have officially entered the world of senior citizen discounts.

I’ve read that 65 is the age of “Late Adulthood”. I can appreciate that label, as I seem to be late in a few areas. For instance, way too late in life I learned that coffee cake does not contain coffee, but is meant to be consumed with coffee. Another useful tidbit recently acquired… potential increases with age.

As folks age, some tend to think they can do less and less, that options are limited. You may think as retirement age nears that it’s too late to learn something new. However, I think we can do more and more as we age as we’ve had a lot longer to soak up knowledge – and we’ve had much more time to (try to) learn from our mistakes.

Numbers are not definitions

When a number – whether it’s your age, your weight, or your GPA – becomes your identity, you’ve given away your power to choose your future. Numbers do not define us; it’s our attitude toward those numbers that do so.

Our age should not determine when we stop learning, taking on new challenges and exploring. Late Adulthood is not the time for limitations. Rather, it’s a great time to go out and crush whatever societal or self-imposed limitations you may have.

Not too late to be great

The Baby Boomer generation is entering Late Adulthood. We came in with a boom. Let’s spend the next few decades going out with a bang.

Say yes. Say no. Laugh more deeply. Complain less. Ignore critics. Run faster. Read slower. Reach higher. Order dessert. Practice yoga. Climb that mountain. Stomp in the puddles. Be curious. Be outrageous. Embrace adventure. Get outside your comfort zone. Every day, learn something new with an attitude of gratitude.

Hello, Late Adulthood. Let’s get this party started.
