September: gratitude for nature’s generosity

You have tended your vegetable garden and fruit trees all summer; now, finally, it’s time to enjoy the results. But it’s also time to prepare for the season to come. Here are a few tips that will allow you to enjoy further success next year.

For your vegetable garden the priority now is the final harvests, which are such a treat. Take full advantage of this freshness. Then, take note of what follows for the fruits and vegetables that are usually the most popular.

  • Cut back the raspberry canes which bore fruit this year.
  • Divide your strawberry plants and, when needed, replant them.
  • Pinch off the tomato suckers and flowers.
  • Plant your leeks now for a spring harvest.
  • Plant your garlic.
  • Harvest your fresh herbs with a view to conserving them (see GREEN THUMB in the August 2023 issue of Tremblant Express).
  • Consider protecting your vegetable plants from the night frosts which are on their way. Once their fruit has been enjoyed, your fruit trees will also need some tender care.
  • Harvest the fruit still on the trees and collect the fruit that has fallen. It’s time to get out your pots and kettles to prepare your homemade sauces, jellies and jams.
  • Cut the root suckers and suckers off your trees to reduce energy loss.
  • Clear their bases of grass and weeds.
  • Check for caterpillars, aphids and plant lice, or other beetles and weevils, then exterminate them as needed.

Remember that the success of your harvests depends on teamwork: synergy between you and nature. Your attention and care, along with the power of nature, create this abundance. Experience gratitude for the joy and the delicious output that results.

Happy season of colours to you all!
