How to choose your organic food basket

You don’t cook much. You have a garden. You leave on a summer vacation. Numerous reasons are given for not signing up for an organic basket. As a result, the family farmers have expanded their offering to suit everyone. This article presents a range of organic baskets in the Laurentians, and what differentiates them.

Distribution points

It’s more ecological to choose a “drop-off point” close to where you live. For Labelle, Saint-Donat and Brébeuf, that’s the Récolte de la Rouge. For Lac-Supérieur and La Conception, your closest is Terre aux Colibris. For Mont-Tremblant, Val-David and Piedmont, the coop Aux Petits Oignons is your four-season supplier. In Rivière- Rouge, the Jardins Enracinés farm near you. For Prévost, it’s Ferme Complètement Légume and the Jardins de la Fourchette.

The type of container

The weekly formula is centred on organic vegetables, as is payment when the season begins, which supports the farmers. The Récolte de la Rouge baskets guarantee you privileged access to delicious organic strawberries. The coop Aux Petits Oignons offers, in addition to your share of Québec’s organic produce, a subscription to bouquets of summer flowers as well as prepared products in the winter baskets.

The size of the basket

The smallest basket on the market is offered by Terre aux Colibris at $20 per week, whereas the most generous is Récolte de la Rouge’s large format at $46 per week. For those wanting flexibility, the à la carte baskets from the Jardins Enracinés allow you to spend the amount you want on vegetables each week.

Other flexible advantages

Even with a subscription, you can take summer holidays. All you have to do is advise your family farmer and the value will be credited. Whether at the farm kiosk or the public market, several farms now offer prepaid cards providing the purchaser with a discount. That’s true of the Terre aux Colibris, the coop Aux Petits Oignons and the Jardin Cent Pépins. So that’s it.

No more excuses. Time to subscribe!
