Billie the go-getter

Every year at the 24h event there are a number of touching stories. This most recent event was no exception and the story of Billie, age two, moved both the public and the event organizers.

Last August, Billie and her parents – Camille Lefebvre and Gabriel Hamel – travelled to Italy for their summer vacation. The day after their arrival, Billie lost her sight. A visit to Emergency confirmed what every parent most fears: a diagnosis of cancer. Camille called on her family and loved ones to form a team to participate in the 24h. “A way for Billie’s parents to feel a bit less helpless when facing the unthinkable,” explains Marie-France Houle, team leader and Camille’s best friend.

The goal of raising the largest amount possible was crowned with success. The “Billie la fonceuse” team took the top place, having raised $301,386. Made up of 36 skiers and walkers, the Billie team also qualified in the multi-team category and managed to raise $365,848, also taking first place. Camille herself raised the largest amount by an individual: $163,840. A big round of applause for all concerned!
