Beginning season basics

par Bruce Eaves

The ski season has arrived. Hopefully, you’re physically fit and ready to build up your ski muscles. When you first get out on the snow after having tried out your equipment, it’s time to go back to the basics listed below.

  1. Maintain a good solid position on your skis. Your knees should always be flexed, hips slightly back, and shoulders over your toes.
  2. As you move on your skis, you’ll find there is always fore-aft, lateral and vertical movements in your body position to stay balanced.
  3. Get to your outside ski early in the turn to rely on it, especially in the last third of the turn. The steeper the slope, the more you have to commit to the outside ski.
  4. Turn your legs and feet, and play with good change of direction. At the beginning of the season, it’s good to turn more than you need to in case you get caught with too much speed for your desired line.

These are the basics of skiing. You need to work on them at the beginning of the season, but probably all season long too. Remember to stay solid on your skis and…ski loose like Bruce.
