Mario Lemieux’s Château Fleur de Lys for sale for $22 M

The Wall Street Journal was the first to break the news, after which it spread like wildfire: the owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins has put his Mont-Tremblant residence up for sale.

Located on the slope of Mont Tremblant, overlooking the lake of the same name, the

Château Fleur de Lys, owned by Mario Lemieux – whose nickname is “Le Magnifique”  — is for sale for the modest sum of $21 999 066, with  “the last dollars being a passing tribute to the jersey number of the former centre with the Pittsburgh Penguins”, says sports network RDS.

Inspired by Quebec city’s famous Château Frontenac, the 17000 sq. ft. (1 500 m²) residence, which will be sold completely furnished, has 50 rooms including, in particular, eight bedrooms with a view of Lac Tremblant, 4.5 dining rooms (and we’ll get back to  that), a home theatre, an immense laundry room, a spa with a Vichy shower and a steam shower, a gym, a cold room, a refrigerated room for garbage (yes, indeed), as well as a big room for storing skis and sports equipment. “The estate is a destination in itself,” says listing agent Michel Naud.

All floors in the property are heated but, just in case, the exceptional home has 17 fireplaces to ensure warmth and comfort on those long winter evenings. Come summer, one can enjoy the tennis court, in-ground pool, hot tub and one of the chateau’s enormous terraces. An adjacent guest house also has two bedrooms. There is also a geothermal system equipped with five artesian wells and a diesel generator capable of providing electricity for the entire property. The 17 fireplaces are no less beneficial. One charming detail: the columns used to decorate the house are antiques from an Indian palace dating to 1800. The banisters, stairs, lighting fixtures, chandeliers and lanterns were made to order by Arte Mexico of Los Angeles.

Super Mario’s woodstove “à la Luigi »

Designed by Rémi Fortier of Rémi Fortier Architecture, the vast estate which, according to Michel Naud, “Faithfully represents Mario as a player, in other words, big and elegant,” was built in 2012.  One of the details that caught the media’s attention was the number of dining rooms: 4.5 is an unusual number of rooms in which to eat. Well, one of the 4.5 dining rooms is equipped with an enormous wood-burning pizza oven. Does it count as one of the 17 fireplaces? Hmmm, well you may ask….

“Mario Lemieux is still in love with Tremblant” – Michel Naud

“The Lemieux family is still in love with Mont-Tremblant,” says Michel Naud, real estate broker with Engel & Völkers Tremblant. “They want to stay in the region,” he explains.

As we go to press, Michel Naud has confided that he has received several calls from celebrities, “including some that have displayed real interest.” All bets are off….
