Stay on course

One good way to make progress is to review the basics and go step by step. This way of proceeding will allow you to check your technique, one detail at a time, then to identify and evaluate more quickly the quality of your position and your swing. The fact of taking it apart and then adjusting it will pay off when it’s time to put all the steps together.

Connect your hands

Because every stage of the swing is as important as the one that precedes it, I invite you to analyze your grip. The way you position your hands on the club has a huge effect on the way you hit and control the ball. For a perfect grip, seize the club with your left hand, then lift up the club in front of you to the height of your hips and add your right hand.

Align your hands with your body

When the grip is resting in your fingers, the thumbs and index fingers of both hands form a “V” pointing to your right shoulder, giving you a neutral grip. This grip will help you align the face of the club correctly. Remember that the pressure exerted on the club will be, respectively, divided 7 to 3 between the left hand and the right hand.

Let your club follow your body

The role of the backswing is to properly place the forward swing. You must create a forward motion and a strong position to be able to create angles of power across the ball. To do this, ensure that your club returns as the masses of the body move.

When the rotation takes place, body masses are transferred and pressure is felt underneath your feet. As you turn during the backswing, this pressure moves gradually toward the inside of your right heel. As you pause during your swing transition phase, that pressure changes direction toward the inside of your left toe (as the body masses move sideways and forward). Finally, as you move down and forward with the lower body, ground pressure is felt under the front foot as masses are moving gradually from the toe toward the outside of the left heel.

From there, you are able to make a strong, solid movement using the ground and the biggest masses of the body which are leading the swing.

Note: for left-hand golfers, reverse left and right.

Happy golfing!
