Stonehaven: new life for a Sainte-Agathe gem

When elegance, nobility and history are incarnated in one rather mysterious place, only excellence can result. Stonehaven is perched on the side of a mountain and boasts a view that is one of the most magnificent in the Laurentians. In 2014, Alexandre Triquet fell in love with the site. Thanks to the support of Georges Coulombe, well-known manager and investor, and their partners Gylaine Brault and Éric Dandurant, Lorne McGibbon’s dream is in the process of coming back to life. Just as he was on the point of taking a new position elsewhere, the former general manager of the Quintessence hotel, Michel Tremblay, also succumbed to its charm.

“I fell under its spell at first sight,” he admits. “Like the investors, I understood the vision for this grand, prestigious, recreational-tourism hotel project.”

A hotel for recreational tourists

“I believe in this project,” Mr. Tremblay continues, “and in the region’s enormous potential. Stonehaven will bring, as it did in the past, a great deal of economic development to Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts. We also have an excellent partnership with the town. At every stage of this huge restoration, we favour local sourcing.”

In Phase 1, Stonehaven will become a full-service hotel centre with a restaurant, glassed-in reception room with a 360° view, spa, massage centre, outdoor bar, ballroom, film projection room for conference-goers, huge pool and lovingly restored English gardens.

“I’m quite sure that our restoration,” Mr. Tremblay continues, “will meet the varied expectations of our local, national, and also international, visitors.”

A prestigious local treasure

The vision of Alexandre Triquet, along with the flair and extraordinary management talents of Mr. Coulombe, will allow Stonehaven to rediscover its original New England inspiration.

“In view of the heritage style that Mr. Coulombe wants,” says Alexandre Trirquet, “the interior decoration will bring together the charm and elegance of the old with the user-friendliness of the modern. In each of our rooms and suites, visitors will find period furniture, artefacts and lighting that are pure New England in style, lovingly collected by Mr. Coulombe.”

The immense property, planted with hemlock, pine and spruce, represents, in Phase 1, an investment of more than 10 million dollars.

“We also want area residents to take back for themselves this historical gem of their region,” adds Mr. Triquet. “It is a true resort, with one of the longest waterfronts in the Laurentians, in the process of emerging from the ground!”

When Hollywood came to Stonehaven

A real history buff, Alexandre Triquet says that, “When Théâtre Le Patriote was nothing more than Lorne McGibbon’s experimental stables, friends and Hollywood stars came to kick up their heels or rest and relax in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, the P’tit Train du Nord apparently brought Clark Gable, John F. Kennedy Sr., John Wayne and Audrey Hepburn, and Stonehaven was there to welcome them.”

“This magnificent hotel project will host, starting this fall, business clients and several weddings. The general public will be awaited with enthusiasm starting at the end of fall, on November 30,” notes Michel Tremblay.

To highlight the opening, several events will take place over the course of 2019.
