The rule of three

As learners, we have the advantage of developing our skills to communicate better and connect with ourselves. And because it’s easier to start off simply, the idea would be to minimize the amont of information to retain, and to remember three points at the most. It’s a bit like going to the gym and proceeding by stages, except it’s a lot more fun because the goal is to have a good link and connection with ourselves and our skills.

So if you’re working on your swing, just think of a maximum of three points or better still, just one. For example, because the most important factors in a good swing are the elements that you establish prior to the swing, pay attention to your posture, grip, or alignment. If you linger on a second fundamental within the swing, pay attention to your backstroke, as the beginning of a whole (which influences your front swing), or your finish in perfect balance (which influences the ball’s trajectory).

When you are warming up before a round, emphasize the short game by starting with it, and take as much time preparing your putts and your approach shots as you do your long game.

Lastly, be aware of the fact that when you play or work on your connection with yourself and your skills, you cover the mental, physical and emotional aspects. After all, it’s natural to imagine your stroke and your swing before you do them. It’s also normal to feel and perceive your swing during your practice swing. It’s a physical training process. And after having imagined it, and perceived the swing with your senses, it is quite natural to let it reproduce itself, by itself, by letting it go, easily. Which is training in reinforcing your confidence.

It’s really pleasant to be able to apply our communication basics, particularly when we realise to what point they transform, year after year, our way of connecting with ourselves and with our experience of play and of learning.

Enjoy your golf!
