First impressions

At the border of the property, visitors get an impression of what awaits them. In fact, the entry to the property is the best place to make your mark and exercise your charm. It gives a preview of the landscaping and style of the residence.

Big slender trees such as the English oak “fastigiata” or the Norway spruce or Colorado spruce look good placed all along the road leading to the home. A lane lined with hydrangeas will provide a spectacular effect thanks to their white corymbs – their balls of white flowers. This is not, however, a good plant to use if you have deer.

No need to extend it as far as the house; a defined space bordered by a welcoming structure or small wall is enough. The wall is usually made of material that looks the same as or similar to that of the house. For a Scottish look, small fieldstone walls integrate well with the natural surroundings.

The plantings should not hide the address. Well-chosen lighting or an LED band under the top of the wall is indispensable to highlight the whole.

Standing stones can also serve as property guardians. Just one, well selected, or two of medium size and, on the other side, a larger block of stone, look good. To them you can attach the address number in wrought iron or aluminum, depending on whether you want a modern or more traditional look. For a harmonious look, it’s important that the style chosen be consistent.

A wrought-iron gate is reminiscent of seigneurial homes, particularly if the style is lacy, but it can also have a contemporary look. A wooden arch with climbing vines is another option.

A work of art placed at the entry provides an original marker. Welcome to creativity.
