Understanding and managing eczema

I frequently notice the significant incidence of eczema during consultations for other issues. Eczema presents as inflammatory eruptions characterized by redness, intense skin dryness and persistant itch. This condition results from an alteration in the skin barrier, making the skin more receptive to allergens, bacteria and environmental irritants,

Here are a few practical strategies to relieve symptoms, reduce eruptions and improve the quality of life of persons with eczema

During periods of eczema, appropriate hydration of the skin with the help of unscented creams designed for sensitive skins is essential. Crucial steps include cleansing gently with warm water, then immediately applying a moisturizing cream on still-damp skin.

Optimal treatment involves the use of anti-inflammatory creams, often with a cortisone base, prescribed by a health professional.

Calming the itching and prevent scratching

Scratching aggravates eczema. Methods for soothing the itch – application of cool, damp cloths; keeping the creams in the refrigerator; keeping the hands busy doing pleasant activities – help prevent excessive scratching.

Prevention of infections

Skins subject to eczema are predisposed to infection. Simple actions – handwashing, keeping nails short and clean – are essential for prevention of infections.

Identification and avoidance of triggers

Recognizing the triggers – irritants, acarids (e.g., ticks, mites), dust, animals, pollen, temperature changes, emotions – take on significant importance. Avoiding the triggering factors can contribute to the control of eczema.

When to consult a dermatologist

In the event of an aggravation characterized by skin that is red, painful, swollen, or which presents a liquid discharge, it is imperative that a dermatologist be consulted. Our Laval clinic offers consultation with Dr. Maalouf. Medical treatment may be necessary to treat an eventual infection.

Failing a cure, eczema can be brought under control through the adoption of specific hygiene practices and identification of the triggers. When in doubt, consultation with a health professional ensures optimal management of the condition.
