Your technique… really?

Soirée 2 - Club de frappe

Because golf is a game of imperfection, we need to accept being imperfect. We can’t resist, however, looking for a reason for our inconsistent performance and the blame falls more often than not on technique. Moreover, trying to correct it constantly may not always work towards fixing the real source of the problem. As part of the international certification teaching program, there is a diagram showing six factors that influence technique. For a review of your overall game, I would recommend that you start with the following before making a hash of your golf swing.

Equipment: The service of club fitting is offered at almost all golf clubs and stores, and in most cases free of charge. Not taking advantage of this important service – which aims to maximize your golf performance, while minimizing the impact of a bad execution – could be compared in some cases to wearing boxing gloves to knit.

Emotion: Emotion is the source of bad decisions, fast swings and tension on the grip. The management of your emotions represents a very interesting element because many factors need to be considered to find a successful solution. When you channel all this energy towards the success of your next shot, your emotions can become your best ally. Otherwise they will transform into a factor of destruction.

Environment: Too often, I see golfers trying shots that have little chance of success and if they miss their execution, they will find themselves in a terrible situation. Accept playing the shots that the course offers you and be aware of the obstacles that arise in the selection of your strategy.

Tactic: Be creative if you feel good. Be logical from point A to point B, however, when you have a so-so day. Adapt your game in conjunction with the challenge ahead of you and with your level of ability to interpret and execute your intentions at the present moment.

Mental: This is about having fun playing and keeping your sensory channels open. There is a world of difference between playing a golf game trying to hit a good shot towards a specific target vis-a-vis simply trying not to miss a shot in order to avoid an obstacle. The first frame of mind is exciting compared with the second, which is worrisome.

Physical: Your physical condition plays a deciding role on your performance in a game. Improving it would allow you to keep your focus in order to achieve better results until the last hole and also to reach higher standards with regard to the consistency and power of your shots.
