Curve your way on the golf course

There are many beautiful golf courses in Québec and when we end up playing courses such as le Diable and le Géant, some interesting challenges will confront us. You will be challenged to aim for different targets and avoid many obstacles. Trying always to navigate on these courses by playing a straight ball, with the perfect trajectory, would be a mistake.

We are not robots capable of repeating a perfect swing and therefore, it is best to give ourselves a margin of error by selecting to play a shot with a curved trajectory to reach our target. However, we have to respect certain fundamental elements.

Overprotection of the curved trajectory

Too often, I notice that my clients overprotect a curved ball by aligning themselves directly towards the woods, a sand trap, etc. Essentially, they aim towards a catastrophe with the hope their curved ball will end up on the fairway.

When they do this, a too-open or too-closed alignment towards a target will simply accentuate an already existing problem on top of penalizing a good shot that does not curve as planned.

A straight ball must be rewarded

In most of the situations, you need to choose a body position in which your alignment protects a straight shot…a shot hit directly where your foot line is aiming. For the driver, opt for the left side of the tee blocks if you want to curve the ball towards the left by aiming at the right side of the fairway.

Do the opposite for the curve towards the right. You will then get at least five additional yards of curve that will remain in play and your ball which inadvertently wouldn’t turn will also be in play.
