Bounce is your friend

After discussing last month’s surprising enemy (power), it’s now time to introduce one of your better friends, the bounce.

The bounce is the measurement of the curvature of the sole of a club head. The whole point of the bounce is to prevent the leading edge of your club from digging into the ground. Let’s look at three different situations where you can take advantage of the bounce angle of your clubs.

bounce straight shaft
bounce lean shaft

Short game

Having a lot of club incline at address (picture) makes the cutting part of your club become most prominent? and is not always necessary.

If the ground is not hard, go with a more centred ball position and with less shaft lean at address (picture). In this way, the bounce angle will be most prominent? and therefore more forgiving, meaning that an assured swing is easier to execute.

Bunker

To benefit from the explosion shot, it is imperative that you use the bounce angle of your wedge. To do this you have to initially open the face of your club. Many golfers, however, don’t do this. Here’s the link to an interesting discussion between

Fairway woods

A good impact implies that we hit the ball first and then the grass. This is even truer for the #3 wood, because the loft is not very high (15 degrees on average). Try to develop the sensation during your practice swings of bouncing your #3 wood on the ground and not of biting the grass.

The impact between the ground and your club should be located in the centre of the sole of the club head. By acquiring the bounce sensation, you will be less timid in hitting down your #3 wood, resulting in the proper lift of the ball.
