The return of volatility

Last year I wrote several articles about various financial subjects such as the management style used by your portfolio manager, how to live with market volatility, possibilities for the stock markets, and more.

During meetings with investors, I noticed that they are more worried than ever about their financial future. They are more interested in ascertaining the amount to keep in the stock markets to achieve their objectives than they are in choosing the management style or mutual funds to get there.

On July 31, the Dow Jones American stock market index reached a record high of 27,400 points. That’s a recovery of more than 18% since the beginning of the year. Following that, August saw a number of variations that went from a fall of 6.85% to finally end up with a negative return of around 2%.

I don’t believe that this volatility will disappear before the end of American international negotiations. Not to mention the risk of recession and the remarkable statements made by the president, which weaken the stock market and contribute to the instability of the various indices.

Far be it from me to recommend a management style or distribution of assets to use during this time of uncertainty. It is, however, strongly advised that you keep in regular contact with a financial advisor. Currently, given the current low interest rates, it’s a good time to keep extra liquid assets on hand. This reserve could be useful in the event that the stock markets fall.

Invitation

I would be happy to chat with you about the financial markets on the afternoon of Saturday, October 26, from 1:30 p.m. at Michel Poirier’s Galerie 806 at 806 rue de Saint-Jovite in Mont-Tremblant.  Drinks and canapés will be served.
