Gardening by the moon: myth or reality?

In this year 2024, marked by the total solar eclipse of April 8, our attention and curiosity have been piqued by the forces of the universe and our interconnection. Speaking of which, have you ever wondered about the influence of the moon on the success of your flower gardens and vegetable patches?

False beliefs or a real connection?

The effects of the Moon on the Earth have not yet been fully explored or explained. However, moon-related gardening as practised in Quebec comes from European beliefs. For those who would like to try the experience, here are the major lines to follow.

  • During the Moon’s ascendant phase (waxing), the ancient beliefs said that the sap would mount into the high parts of the plant. This was explained by the gravitational attraction of the Moon. This would be the time for seeding, planting, and the setting out of plants which produce fruits or seeds (tomatoes, beans, etc.)
  • During the Moon’s descendant phase (waning), gravity would favour the presence of sap in the roots. It would be the right time to set out your cuttings or put seeds in the ground of plants which would not grow to seed (spinach, lettuce, onions, etc.) and also for your plants with flowers, roots or bulbs.
  • During the full Moon is the best time to harvest fruits and vegetables to obtain the richest juice and have the best appearance.

During the moon’s perigee, when it’s closest to the earth, all gardening is to be avoided.

While our Quebec springtime seems well underway, remember this advice: don’t plant your annuals before the last full Moon of May has passed. This will happen on May 23 this year. When you think about it, the rule is very simple: you can plant as soon as all risk of the soil freezing has passed, and this full Moon is the best sign.

Happy spring, everyone!
