When being “in the red” becomes pleasant
François Gay et Fils Chorey-Lès-Beaune 2019
An appellation (statement of identity) long eclipsed by the reputation of neighbouring appellations, the Chorey-Lès-Beaune takes its place in the sun among the Burgundian appellations. Pascal Gay, the son of François, offers this ruby-coloured (with young highlights) pinot noir.
The impression of youth is confirmed by the nose with its primary aromas of cherry and licorice. Remarkably structured, the mouth is pleasant and accompanied by light, not-bitter tannins.
Serve at 15°C with grilled veal rib chops.

Dalfarras Nero d’Avola Victoria 2019
Sicily’s best-known grape, from the town of Avola, the Nero d’Avola is now grown in Victoria (Australia) at the Tahbilk vineyard.
The nose is a bouquet of spices, ripe fruit and cocoa. Supple and generous, the mouth wallows in a kirsch-like texture, with light tannins.
As a pairing, the reverse label suggests tuna steak; I agree.

Le Loup Blanc Minervois Le Régal 2021
Alain Rochard – now a full-time winemaker in his native Languedoc after a 31-year adventure in Québec restaurants – has taken advantage of “his second home” to bring us up to date on the latest vintages produced at Le Loup Blanc vineyard.
“Le Régal”, is the perfect name for this red, which is full of flavour and freshness. The mix of grenache, carignan and syrah surprises with its manageable price while carrying a rich aroma of fresh fruit and Mediterranean herbs.
Drinking this wine in moderation is a challenge.

Le Loup Blanc Le Régal Rosé 2022
There was no clear glass available – due to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict – so Le Régal Rosé is bottled in coloured glass.
The label notes, however: “Yes, Yes, it’s a rosé!” Sharp fellow, that Rochard.
