Erik Guay wants to open his gym to the public

Would you like to train in Erik Guay’s personal gym? If it were just up to the skier, it would happen soon.

Erik says that more than four decades ago his parents built a log stable made of Douglas fir on their huge 130-acre property in La Conception, It’s located in natural surroundings, ringed by trees and fields. Over the years, the horses made way for a jumble of stuff, which Erik got rid of to renovate the building, putting in large windows and installing high-end pneumatic training equipment so as to perfect his pre-season preparation.

“They sometimes have this kind of equipment in training centres in big cities like Montreal, but it’s rare,” he notes.

Erik hopes to open the facilities to athletes, to people recovering from injuries and those who care about their health. The gym would be available by reservation. In time, the Mont-Tremblant resident could add a yoga and stretching room on the second floor, and perhaps a cycling training room

“The idea is not to make millions with it, but to cover the costs and allow people to have the benefit of it,” he says.

Before making his project a reality, Erik would have to deal with the zoning issue with the municipality of La Conception, because the gym is on land zoned residential. He’s not worried about the eventual parking requirements.

“The property is 130 acres. There’ll be lots of room for parking,” he says, chuckling.
