New junior college building announced

A new campus for 2020

The announcement was made on August 6 at Mont-Tremblant city hall by the Minister of Higher Education and the Status of Women, Hélène David. Close to one hundred of those who had contributed to the creation and development of the Centre collégial de Mont-Tremblant welcomed the news with great enthusiasm.

The future 1,885-square-metre building will be double the size of the current temporary buildings and will be built on the land adjacent to the Centre collégial de Mont-Tremblant, which was acquired by the Ville. It will house facilities “in keeping with a true college campus.”

“In it you’ll find classrooms, science and computer science labs, as well as spaces for socialization and study (cafeteria, student lounge, study areas, library),” said Diane Aitken, the director of the Centre collégial de Mont-Tremblant

Ready for January 2020?

“The phone’s been ringing off the hook,” says Mont-Tremblant mayor Luc Brisebois, interviewed in his office following the announcement. “It’s very positive. It’s a big plus for the Mont-Tremblant community and for the region as a whole,” he emphasizes. “We are currently experiencing a shortage of workers. If we are able to train our young people and offer them work experience here, there’s every chance that they’ll go ahead and make their lives here,” he adds.

According to the mayor of Mont-Tremblant, it’s realistic to anticipate that the new Centre collégial will be ready to welcome students starting in January 2020. “We’d like to open in September 2019,” he concedes. “But I believe it would be more accurate to say that we’ll be ready to transfer the existing students in January 2020. The new facilities will be ready for people to visit for back-to-school that same year,” Luc Brisebois notes.

Programs offered

“Regional development is central to the strategic orientation of the Cégep de Saint-Jérôme, which sees the presence of these two regional educational centres as a primary responsibility,” said Nadine Le Gal, director general of the Cégep de Saint-Jérôme. “This announcement allows us to think bi

g and to diversify our menu of programs,” she added.

Students will thus be able to choose among pre-university programs in Behavioural Sciences, Natural Sciences, as well as the new program Arts, Letters and Communication. In technical programs, the program Business Management will still be offered.

“To this range will be added Hotel Management, a program currently under development in collaboration with the Institut de tourisme et d’hôtellerie du Québec (ITHQ). Other programs related to tourism could be added,” Diane Aitken adds.

Ten years of education

The Centre collégial de Mont-Tremblant became part of the junior college group in 2008. Since then it has allowed 300 graduates to continue to university or the workplace. You may remember that the Centre has extended its education offer to adults and businesses.

“It took so many meetings, strategies and negotiations to finally arrive at this great, much anticipated announcement,” said Sylvain Pagé, member pf provincial parliament for Labelle. Mr. Pagé thanked ministers Jean-Marc Fournier et Hélène David; préfetsRonald Provost and Denis Chalifoux, mayors Pierre Pilon and Luc Brisebois as well as directors general Serge Tessier and Nadine Le Gal, “Not to mention the indispensable Paul Calce,” he added.
