A challenging swim: the Traversée du Lac Tremblant

There is something magical about seeking adventure. For a kid growing up in the ‘70s, there wasn’t much adventure indoors. Our television was black and white with three channels. Summer break was all about us kids getting outside and exploring new frontiers.

Over time, however, something happened and we grew up. Rational and responsible thinking took over, effectively choking out an adventurous spirit.

As that kid, I recall overcoming a terrifying mix of emotions to finally jump off the high diving board at our local pool. It was something I wanted to do, until it became something I needed to do. After all, my buddy swam the length of the pool underwater. He was an eight-year-old legend, and I wanted some of that.

Folks who have grown up around lakes and cottages all seem to have a tale or two about local heroes who swam across their lakes. Campfire stories recount tales of brave souls who dare to conquer the mysteries of the deep.

You can be sure that generations of marshmallow roasters will keep those legends and their feats alive, long after they are gone.

If you were a swimmer in a past life, the Traversée du Lac Tremblant might just be the adventure you’ve been looking for. Why would anyone swim across the lake, you ask? To get to the other side, of course. Seriously, a Lac Tremblant crossing is a big challenge. Real big.

For me, there is something special about pushing boundaries. I’ve done a few big challenge swims over the years, and the gratification that comes from exploring the unknown nourishes me.

Every stroke moving me further and further from shore is exhilarating. Taming self-doubt, staying in the present, and rolling with rough water and foul weather: these are life skills worthy of pursuit.

On the lighter side, I do enjoy saying silly things like, “If I was on a cruise ship and it sank, I know I’ll be able to swim to shore”. What I really mean is that in the face of any struggle to survive, I like my chances.

If you are looking to challenge yourself, the Traversée du Lac Tremblant is calling you: August 3 – 4, 2019. traverseelactremblant.ca
