Gustav Lorentz Evidence Riesling Alsace 2020

The record high temperatures registered in 2020 had some of the Alsatian wine producers literally sweating. The heat, with its attendant dryness, can concentrate the sugars in the grape and by the same token, reduce the acidity required for good balance.

The saving grace(s) here were the cool nights and an early August harvest which guaranteed a good vintage. These worked well for the Riesling “Évidence” (organic, vegan) of the house of Lorentz, which is planned to be a drier wine.

The exoticism of lime, grapefruit and ripe yellow fruits confirm the vintage effect. Almost high-strung, the acidity supports the strength and fullness of this Alsace white “pensé pour arrêter de penser” – loosely, created to make one stop thinking.

Consider serving it with a flammekueche (Alsatian pizza) to enjoy the moment.

Partners in Loire Montlouis-sur-Loire Les Trois Parcelles 2020

Land-clearer and talented winemaker François- Xavier Barc created “Complices De Loire” in 2010 and surrounded himself with winemakers who shared the same philosophy: that of transporting the expression of the Pays de la Loire terroir into a glass.

A kind of high-fashion wine trade. The quality of the fruit in the Montlouis-sur- Loire demonstrates this right away. Those who enjoy minerality will be delighted as here, the chenin digs its roots down into the chalky subsoil.

The barrel aging is not at all evident in the nose, but in the mouth, the method produces a lovely richness along with excellent freshness. The flavours of pears mix those of citrus, melting into a salty finish.

Pairs well with chicken on skewers with coriander, or speckled trout freshly caught, for the more adventurous.

Juvé Y Camps Casa Vella: Espiells Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Known in Quebec for its catalogue of fine bubbles, the house of Juvé & Camps surprises us this time with a flat, and what’s more, red, wine. A single varietal Cabernet Sauvignon and certified organic, like most products of the Bodega, this red is intended for lovers of a “Big Cab”.

An enticing ruby red in colour, this beast not only charms the eye, but also the nose. It’s like having your nose plunged into a basket of plums, blackcurrants and raspberries, picked fully ripe. Same experience in the mouth, adding some moderate notes of pepper and smoke.

Intense, somewhat tannic and rich, which make it a sure thing with cheddar beefburger.
