Quick look at on-trend decoration for 2019

What do furniture, lighting and fabrics look like for next year? Is grey still tops? Here’s a glimpse of what the design industry has in store for us in 2019.

If the trend continues…

Several trends observed in recent years continue, but sometimes with variations. That’s the case with wallpaper, which continues to brighten our wall in small amounts, but whose designs have evolved. While geometric forms are still everywhere, flowers are gaining ground. They are found, in particular, as murals featuring one single image or the impression of a work that is represented in a single panel.

Turning to furniture, we still see refined, Scandinavian-inspired furniture warmed through the use of fabrics featuring colour, pattern or texture, including knits and tweeds. As far as grey – which has coloured our walls for the past several years – is concerned, it is evolving towards warmer iterations such as taupe. It is still used with white, which remains popular even though forest green, navy blue and black show up in small quantities. On the other hand, wood is pale, for furniture and kitchen cupboards as well as floors. These latter continue into the kitchen, preventing segmentation of spaces in open-concept areas.

Long life to eclecticism!

It is still popular to mix styles and create contrasts. For example, an oversized, worn, brightly coloured carpet brightens up a neutral, spare décor. Or antique-looking plumbing fixtures find a place in a white kitchen, and a painted vanity looks wonderful in a modern, clean-lined bathroom.

The most daring could even opt for a black toilet or a forest green sink! As with many of the trends coming from Europe, coloured plumbing appliances are starting to be seen on this side of the Atlantic. Some designers, such as Marie-Pier Désormeaux of the Natur meubles & design store in Mont-Tremblant, like to mix things up and work with sustainable trends.

Welcome to matte finishes

The kitchen is one of the places where a matte finish is making a dramatic entrance. Cupboards with shiny lacquered finishes are giving way to ultra-matte finishes. Same thing with electrical appliances, faucets and hardware, all of which are also showing up in matte textures. You’ll see black matte or pewter refrigerators and stoves, even though white is make a return appearance. Same thing with extractor hoods, sinks and lighting fixtures that are gold, copper or brass-coloured with a matte or brushed finish. Hanging lamps are becoming important decorative elements in this room, which is so central to the home.

A return of the past

We shall also remember 2019 as the year that marked the big return of terrazzo. The material, which covers the floors of many hospitals, schools and government institutions, is reappearing in ceramics and decorating accessories. It looks particularly handsome in the kitchen, where it takes place of honour on floor, walls or counter. Another case where yesterday’s trend become tomorrow’s hot item!
