Be your own hero

As the Olympic flame burned in PyeongChang, South Korea, we witnessed death-defying leaps, dizzying speed and unparalleled grace as the best athletes in the world competed to stand atop the Olympic podium as a hero. All athletes strove to be the best that they could be in their pursuit of excellence.

Continual and consistent focus is required to become one’s best self. Unflinching dedication, determination, discipline and sacrifice made the Olympic athletes heroes in their communities and their countries, and, as we all watched the Olympics unfold in February, heroes on the world stage.

Whether you are just beginning your journey to health and fitness, or are well on your way, I challenge you to be the hero of your own life. Ignite your fire within and be the best that you can be.

A few tips to consider on your way:

Self-motivation: No one can make you want to be fit and healthy. You must want it; it must come from within. Just like Olympians, heroes motivate themselves, and by extension, they motivate others, and so will you.

Self-control: If you believe you have control over the outcomes of your decisions, you will be more resilient in the face of challenges. Heroes don’t always win, but heroes bounce back from adversity. It may rain on race day. You can’t control the weather, but you can control how you react to it. Take it in stride, that’s what heroes do.

Challenge yourself: Everyone is busy. Heroes aren’t heroes because they have time; heroes make the time. Challenge yourself to set aside the time to be your own hero.

Endure: Life is full of obstacles and sometimes it may feel overwhelming. If you feel like quitting, remind yourself of why you started and how far you have come. Remember, heroes don’t give up; they persevere and fight until the end.

You have the power to change yourself and your life and be the best that you can be. Ignite your fire within. Make yourself proud. Be your own hero.
