Tennis anyone?

Love means nothing…

Although I have never much cared what anyone thought of my athletic prowess (or lack thereof), I have found the older I get, the less I care. This mindset came in handy during my first tennis lesson.

It’s not racquet science

I weighed the pros and cons of giving tennis a swing.

Pros:

  1. Four new municipal tennis courts at the Îlot Sportif Erik Guay.
  2. Free lessons.
  3. I’ve got some fabulous shoes.

Cons:

  1. The free lessons are from my husband. (
  2. Multiplying by 15 is annoying.
  3. The free lessons are from my husband….

Kiss my ace:

Regardless of the possible downside, I decided to give tennis a try. My husband has been playing his entire life; how hard could it possibly be? My first lesson on Mont-Tremblant’s municipal courts did not go as badly as I thought it would. But there are now a few tennis balls on the roof of the Complexe Aquatic that someone needs to fetch.

Patience is a virtue

To be a good tennis player requires speed, agility, quick thinking and strength. To be a beginner requires patience. Although there are a lot of technical skills that require practice (and more practice), tennis can still be a lot of fun for a beginner. Just being outside and active is a bonus. And working up a sweat is fairly easy when you’re chasing balls all over the court. Having a very patient teacher (husband) is also good.

A game of love

Although my first lesson was a lot of wild swings and ball gathering, I can see the allure of becoming better. It’s never too late to start, and it’s a game you can play for a lifetime. And who wouldn’t want to learn to play a game that even if you don’t score, it’s love?
