In the mood to feel like you’re eight years old again? If so, I’ve got a snow- drenched idea you are going to love.

Fat and fun

Adventure awaits on a fat bike. They are a blast on the snowy trails. You’ll be having so much fun, you won’t even know it’s exercise.

Touted as the juggernaut of bicycles, a fat bike looks like someone stole the oversized wheels off a motorbike, deflated them a bit, and impaled them onto a stripped-down bicycle frame. Not real sexy, but real fun.

Most people (like me) do not ride in the cold because, well, it’s cold. However, unlike on a road bike, on a fattie you won’t hit 40K an hour. You’ll cruise along closer to an 8K pace. There’s not much wind generated at that speed, and you’ll have time to appreciate Mother Nature in all her snowy splendour.

Backwoods biking

No need to break the bank on a new bike. Renting is the way to go if you want to give this winter sport a spin. It could not be easier. Expérience SK at the Grand Lodge in Mont-Tremblant is a one-stop shop for fat biking (and loads of other sports).

Simon Chapleau’s team at Expérience SK is knowledgeable, attentive and eager to help people have fun outdoors. Tristan Lataille made sure I had a good bike fit and was ready to ride. The biking trails begin right outside their front door.

A Sunday morning spent on a fattie was gloriously beautiful and absolutely silly fun. Arlene Ayoub was a patient trail guide. Jennifer Laframboise was, as always, a delightful partner as we laughed our way up one hill and down the next.

Whatever your skill set, fat biking is a blast. Don’t let winter pass without at least one fat bike adventure.
