Have you noticed a sudden urge to dance as you approach the Duncan chair at Tremblant? North Side fans know the secret: the music of Magic Mat, chairlift operator for more than twenty years.

Your safety is his priority

As a lift operator, Mathieu Tarissants-Gravel must pay constant attention to the non-verbal language of the guests and to mechanical changes. Far from diverting him from his responsibilities, the music helps make him even more alert and focused. Sometimes the way the skier dances – or not! – tells him a lot about the skier’s experience. He can then slow the chair or offer help.

This snowboard-loving DJ prepares his music lists in advance while visualizing the mountain and the snow. He selects a variety of music styles with groove such as jazz and reggae, and introduces guests to artists such as L’Entourloop, Skara Mucci and Wax Tailor. In this exchange of energy, he bears in mind giving pleasure to his North Side colleagues by adding alternative rock and a few winks.

Music is his passion!

Magic Mat pursues his career as a DJ by accepting corporate contracts and by organizing events with a friend. It’s the electronic scene that calls for use of all his artistry. His favourite styles are “bass house” and “psytrance”. As he mixes, he pays particular attention to the key of each piece to created a harmonious progression which tells a story.

Ambience is his objective

His reward is the good ambience that reigns when everyone is enjoying being there together. His goal is not to attract the projectors onto himself. Magic Mat prefers to have the skiers’ attention focused on either the music or what it makes them feel.
