Wines from La paysanne du Nord

Those who work the land have one common denominator: they are passionate about the land and pursue their dream come hell or high water, living their lives in tune with the seasons. Chantal Gaudreau embodies this determination.

About ten years ago, she and her spouse Gilles Lecavalier planted 6,000 rustic grape vines in Labelle to replace the hothouse English cucumbers they’d been growing for 15 years. This was the start of the Spirit Léonard vineyard, honouring the spirit of the family land.

After numerous tests and with the advice of an experienced oenologist, they decided on the grapes best suited to the production of top quality aromatic wines. Four years later, the initial wine was produced and now, it’s time for growth.

The vineyard is closed in the winter, but the wines are available year-round at Bourassa in Mont-Tremblant, Marché Tradition in La Minerve and Dépanneur de Labelle Beausoir.

With the return of the warm weather, the vineyard is open to the public so visitors can taste La paysanne du Nordwines. (A “paysanne” is a female peasant or rural dweller.) The red wine, light and clear, offers notes of jammy red fruits and pairs well with grilled dishes, white meats, fish and light cheeses.

The aperitif wine, rich and complex, is reminiscent of cranberry and cacao and pairs well with dark chocolate, blue cheese, nuts or a dessert. Groups can also reserve a festive tent for a reception or wedding.

This summer, a cycling visit would be the ideal way to become acquainted with this charming rural resident and her products.

Her wishes for 2019? To have people discover her new white wine, enjoy more visibility in restaurants, produce more song-filled evenings and above all, to have an abundant harvest and a solution to the problem of birds and deer… who love their grapes!
