Olympic Games in the time of covid

The possibility that one or several of our athletes fall ill or test positive just before the Olympic Games is obviously a concern. The question is this: if they do, should they be protected and asked not to participate in the races or in training runs prior to the Olympics, or is it better to let them ski?

I know they’re doing everything they can to protect themselves. But it is not possible to control everything. The important thing is that our athletes access the Games and be able to concentrate.

Games without spectators

Beijing will host the first spectator-free Winter Olympic Games. Obviously, we expect that these Games will be different from earlier ones. Personally, I have often lacked time for my family and for attendees at the Olympics. The athletes are in their bubble and are protected. Participating in the Games requires full commitment and focused concentration at all times.

The ambience will not, of course, be the same at the finish line, but it will allow the athletes not to let themselves be distracted. If things go as we hope they will, and as the athletes wish, we will all, as Canadians, be able to celebrate their homecoming together.

Olympic hopefuls

We have a very good chance to collect some medals in Beijing. Things are going extremely well in alpine skiing, particularly for the girls. In ski cross, all hopes are allowed. Remember, we won two gold medals in the last Games (women and men) as well as the women’s silver (Brittany Phelan).

In moguls, we are also very optimistic. And as far as our Paralympic team is concerned, we have one of the best, if not the best, teams in the world. That will be really interesting to follow.

Good luck to all our athletes!
