Conventional weight transfer? Forget it!

There’s a big difference between intentionally transferring your weight, and simply pivoting. The first tends to create a linear movement and an excessive hip sway. The second, the right way to do it, creates a rotation of the torso, and hips, and a power that pulls along – correctly – the centre of mass of the body, resulting in explosive shots.

A good swing results from addressing the ball properly and hence, from this circular movement of the torso and hips which creates a good pivot, you get the appropriate movement from one leg to the other, distancing of the arms during the backswing and their return during the transition and impact zone.

It’s the initial movement of the body core that produces a driving effect and rotational force, centrifugal and centripetal force, during the motion. The transfer of the body mass, of the centre of gravity and the pressures exerted onto the ground, are the result of this action.

If you want to have the experience of a good address position at set-up and a good pivot during the back swing and then during the transition and downswing, I suggest this simple exercise.

Start by tilting your pelvis at least 1° towards the target; your spine will naturally tilt behind the ball. Thus, the share of mass will be 60 per cent on the front leg (left in a right-handed person) and 40 per cent on your back leg.

For the loading and unloading of the swing, begin and end from the core of your body, that is, with the hips and torso, by pivoting and completing the rotation from one heel to the other.

Have a good practice, and enjoy your golf!
