Being bad at something new

I’am a terrible skier. I can’t speed skate. I suck at hockey. I am the worst trail biker. How do I know these things with certainty? Because I have never tried them. It’s pretty much a given. You will be bad at something you’ve never tried. And, as in my case, even after you try it – you may continue to suck at it….

Embrace the suck

It’s tempting to beat yourself up when you try something new and it does not instantly go well. Not sucking at something is a basic aspiration. However, if you let go of the idea that you should not try something because you might suck at it… a whole new world of opportunities opens up. Which is how I found myself in Catherine Choquette’s PoundRock class at Gym OxyClub.

Pounding into the New Year

I adore Catherine. She is smart, fun and motivational. And she can pound out a beat on a par with Meg White from White Stripes. Instead of listening to music, with PoundRock, you become the music.

This full-body workout has it all. It combines cardio, conditioning, and strength training with yoga and Pilates all in one. Using lightly-weighted drumsticks engineered specifically for exercising, PoundRock transforms drumming into an incredibly effective way of working out.

It’s designed for all fitness levels. But, more than likely you will suck at it the first time out. Don’t let that stop you.

Ditch the comfort zone

The past year highlighted the fact that we do not know what tomorrow may bring. With that in mind, ditch the comfort zone. Take on a challenge you may suck at. You will never know how much fun it can be unless you give it a try. Be bad at something new in 2021.
