Washing the boat: a requirement vital for keeping our lakes healthy

Whether on a private property or a public boat launch area, people using area lakes are now required to wash their boat, including the motor and trailer, every time they put it in the water, and to wash their trailer prior to taking the boat out of the water.

What was formerly a recommendation via an environmental and courtesy code is now clearly stated in a municipal bylaw.

Motor boats and water craft without motors

The owners of a motor boat(fuel or electric) and trailer are required to go to a certified washing station to wash their equipment, where they will obtain a certificate of washing (a sticker)

Owners of non-motorized water craft (windsurfer, paddleboard, canoe, kayak, etc) must, before putting the craft into the water, carefully inspect their craft, wash it at a minimum distance of 30 metres from any watercourse or body of water, remove all animal and vegetable organisms found on the hull, trailer, or other equipment related to the craft and, lastly, empty all containers that could contain water from another river or lake.

Please note: you must make an appointment

The wash sticker (certificate) is valid only for the lake named on it. It must be affixed to each motorized craft and trailer immediately after the wash. The sticker expires automatically after 24 hours or as soon as the craft is removed from the lake. In other words, the craft may not go back into the lake, or into any other body of water on the territory of the Ville, without being washed again.

In the event of a breach of the law…

The fine for a first offense is $500 plus costs. The amount of the fine is increased for a repeat offense and can go as high as $2000 for an individual and $4000 for a company.
