Ironman 70.3, 5i50 and Sprint: a full-throttle weekend!

More than 5,500 athletes will participate in one of the three competitions of the Subaru Ironman 70.3, 5i50 and Sprint triathlon festival on the weekend of June 23 and 24 in Mont-Tremblant. The organizers of the event, whose success has propelled Mont-Tremblant to the top of the heap of Ironman races on the international circuit, were recently awarded the job of organizing the Montreal Marathon. Quite an honour for Dominique Piché’s team.

On Saturday, June 23, at 7 a.m., 745 participants – including 35 teams – will be at the starting line for the Sprint. It’s the shortest of the Ironman circuit triathlons with a 750- metre swim, 20 km of biking and 5 km of running. Thirty minutes later, more than 1,350 athletes will hurl themselves into the water to start their 5i50, whose distance is that of an Olympic triathlon: double that of the Sprint formula.

On Sunday, June 24, the 70.3 will have our area humming with activity with more than 3,400 athletes from 19 countries. The formula of this triathlon is rather more demanding. Participants have to conquer a 1.9 km swim, a 90 km bike ride and a 21.1 km run in a maximum time of 8 hours 30 minutes. More than 1,500 volunteers have answered the call and will yet again ensure the success of this sporting event.

The Dominique Piché team takes the reins of the Montreal Marathon

Speaking of success, we have learned via press release that for this 28th running of the event, “[…]the Marathon international Oasis de Montréal will be carried out for the first time under the Ironman banner by the Quebec team directed by Dominique Piché”.

“We have reinvented the Marathon to give the event back to the citizens and make it an event that reflects Montreal’s image and its cultural richness,” said Dominique Piché, producer and director of the Marathon international Oasis de Montréal.

“The public cares about the Marathon and we want them to continue to be proud of it: the event will be closer to the districts and will reflect a more sustainable approach. We see the event in a longer-term perspective that will provide a legacy for the community,” he added.

The IRONMAN®, brand, since its creation in 1978, has seen unique growth from one single race to an international phenomenon that today includes more than 250 races in 50 countries.
