Heading for Kona, chapter 2

In the first chapter of this logbook, I spoke to you about the first event on my road to Kona. I wrote that everything was going as planned. I would fly off to the Brazil Ironman on May 19 to seek qualification points for the Ironman World Championships.

But life had a surprise in store for me….

Shortly after writing my first chapter, I launched into a session of intense running sprints. Unfortunately, when the next running session ended I was having difficulty walking. A simple false move during one of the sprints had caused some kind of a shift or displacement in my lower back. I visited my chiropractor, Andréanne Ethier Chiasson, the indispensable member of my team who always gets me back on my feet quickly. But this time the injury was greater and Andréanne told me that recovery would take time. I must admit that it was frustrating at the beginning to watch the possibility of going to Brazil recede into the distance, and to feel my physical fitness, acquired at such cost, diminish day after day.

When these kinds of things happen, I have to remind myself that to succeed in an Ironman, as in life, the key is to have unshakeable positivity. If you face the unexpected, and there is always the unexpected, you just have to put on blinkers. You have to forget the future and the past and live in the present. I believe that you also have to realize that your objective has changed. The end point of winning a race or achieving an ideal changes into a very simple goal: staying positive. It’s an important exercise that can become a game. In other words, what happened to me allowed me to take on a different kind of training and one that applies very well to life.

When an obstacle forces me to change my intended path, I tell myself that it is life that wanted to guide me differently. In this specific case, in looking for another race to undertake, I realized that my only option in terms of getting the points in time was to do the Ironman France, in Nice. Nice, the Ironman that I had always dreamed of doing but which had never been doable in the past because of the dates….

I’m recovering and continuing to work on positive thinking, my friends. I’m motivated to be able to run again, with this new stage in mind. The Nice event really inspires me. Thank you for reading, and good luck with your own adventures!
