Dance like no one is watching

Like many little girls, I wanted to be a ballerina. Dancing was magical. It was like fairy dust – sprinkle a bit on and the world was sugar-coated wonderful.  However, like many childhood dreams, my prima ballerina career never made it past my teenage years.

My last ballet class was well over four decades ago. That was, until I donned a pair of tights and gave my inner Anna Pavlova a whirl with Julie Thiffault at Au pas de Chat, Studio de Danse.

Corps de ballet

Because dancing is so much more fun with friends, I brought along a literal troupe of would be ballerinas. We were close to a dozen middle aged and senior citizens poised at the barre, while the theme from Swam Lake wafted through the air.

With patience and grace, Julie Thiffault took us step by step through the basic positions and movements in our first session, then built on our elementary skill set in our second class.

Regardless of whether we looked like klutzy ducklings, joy filled the room as we chasséd from one corner of the studio to the next. We spun and skipped, and danced like nobody was watching.

Ensconced in Au pas de Chat’s new studio, we weren’t a room full of aging adults, we were kids again.  We were fledgling ballerinas as we practiced our jetés, pirouettes and glissades. We danced with our hearts and our feet followed.

What makes your heart sing?

February is a celebration of love – and there is no one better to love than yourself.

Did you ever imagine dancing in the Nutcracker? Defying gravity like Mikhail Baryshnikov? Or perhaps just celebrating movement like the teens in Footloose?

If so, give it a try. There is no time like the present. February is the perfect month to do something that makes your heart sing.
