Love the one you’re with!

As many of you know, I spend most of the school year in the West, coming back and forth through the spring and then for the whole summer.  Thanks to our amazingly competent partners we are able to do this, so thank you!

Part of what this means is that I have had the opportunity to see other landscapes, and what is possible planting-wise in a completely different environment, such as Vancouver, or in Whistler, which has a similar “raison d’être” as Tremblant but a very different climate.

One of the things this has really made me appreciate is that different things are possible, and different things are beautiful, in varied climates.  Tremblant is indeed much colder and drier than the left coast.

You need to choose your plants appropriately, and adjust your expectations, but a discerning landscaper can have amazing results.

Tremblant trees may not grow six feet a year, and Magnolias and Rhododendrons won’t cooperate; they just don’t grow in our climate, or if they do, they won’t achieve the gobsmacking magnificence of a Vancouver plant or a Whistler tree.

But modern design seems to trend towards a leaner and more restful feeling in general, and one that I find to be more in keeping with Tremblant’s own natural aesthetic.  Between the weather and the deer, we are not restricted but moved towards grasses, ferns, and shrubs, with some perennials or well-chosen annuals.

This is the reality for most properties, and that’s okay, indeed, it is a very good thing.  Tremblant’s natural environment is leaner, older, and who knows, maybe even wiser?

So rather than pining after the triple-F cup rhododendron that you saw on a trip, embrace the lower-key natural beauty around you…with the occasional splash of colour from annuals.  Love the one you’re with!
