One step follows another

Every year, company leaders bring their employees to me for advice before their game. It’s a clinic that everybody calls “Walk the Line”. Quite often, 200 players are invited and of these, 100 will turn up at the driving range an hour before tee time for good advice from the pro.

You read it right. I will have 60 minutes to convert 100 beginners into real golfers. Less than two minutes with each one to convince them that they’re talented and well suited to this game. Luckily, over time, I’ve learned that the only way to show someone that they’re good is to have them hit good solid shots.

Here’s what I do to make sure that all the known fundamentals are brought together and applied in a few seconds.

An athletic position

Almost everyone tries to transfer their weight during the swing by moving their hips sideway from left to right. It’s the first error to avoid and it’s with the help of your posture that you’ll be successful at turning instead of sliding.

Tilt your pelvis a few degrees towards the target which will promote a slanting of your spine. Your right hip will be lower and 60 percent of your body weight will rest on your left foot. Next, create a triangle with soft arms, shoulders and your club.

The swing of a pro

Professionals launch the swing with the left side of the body (not the right). Heightening your awareness of the delicate pressures exerted in the last three fingers of your left hand, then start the motion by launching your triangle directly behind the ball which is guided by your left arm and a flat or bowed left wrist.

A transition to a glorious finish

When your athletic position and your professional-style move away from the ball have brought you to a perfect position at the top of your backswing, all you have to do is pull the handle of your club through the ball with the help of your left knee, thigh, hip and arm towards a full finish with your hips facing the target. See you soon, because…here goes!
